Running record

No flagged games have finished yet. The record starts with this weekend's games.

Have weird lines been traps or gifts?

We ran the same checks on every college and NFL game from 2019 to 2025 and graded the side each reason points to against the closing line.

  • College games where the line was far off the season-long market view: 237-262-4.
  • NFL games where the line was far off the season-long market view: 92-89-3.
  • College teams fresh off a big upset win, still getting points: 80-80-2.
  • NFL teams fresh off a big upset win, still getting points: 44-56-2.

So far it's close to a coin flip. A line that looks wrong usually looks wrong for a reason, like an injury or a quarterback change. That's the point of the page: when a number looks off, go find out why before you bet it.

How we pick them

  • The market's own view. We rate every team from this season's closing lines, with recent weeks counting more. If this week's line is far from what those closes add up to (8 points in college, 5.5 in the NFL), it gets a look.
  • Fresh off an upset. A team that just won outright as a big underdog (10+ in college, 6+ in the NFL) and is still getting points.
  • A big move. The line moved 3+ points in college or 2+ in the NFL since the game-week open.
  • One reason per game, the strongest one. Up to 6 games a week. Every fact comes from final scores and lines in our own data.
  • The record grades the side the reason points to against our closing number. These are not picks.
